It doesn't fit with anybody's vision of the future or with the environmentalists' dreams, but for millions of us, the only way to get to work is by private car. Contrary to published reports, it can actually be an enjoyable part of the day.
Who am I? I'm a computer programmer. (They say you aren't what you do for a living, but I think we are that, and more.) I'm a husband, married since 1981, and we are now empty-nesters. I'm a guy who looks at the people at work and thinks they must all be smarter than I am, and a guy who wonders, when the younger employees come to talk to me, if they think they're looking at a wise old programmer. (Truth: They aren't). And I'm a guy who says that commute time is not the worst part of the day.
